The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra

The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Maestro David Zinman, during the recording of a new piece by critically acclaimed contemporary composer Anders Hillborg, called "Cold Heat". The session took place at the blue Konserthuset in Stockholm, Sweden, during November 2013 and will be released by BIS soon.

In Oslo for ECM records

Juan visited Oslo, Norway, to shoot the recording sessions of a couple of ECM albums at the legendary Rainbow Studio. Piano music by Dino Saluzzi, performed by Horacio Lavandera and a debut album on ECM by Danish guitar player/composer Jakob Bro. There was a chance of taking some photos of the Dino Saluzzi Trio (Dino Saluzzi/Anja Lechner/Felix Saluzzi) at the amazing venue of the Oslo Opera House. The beautiful weather helped achieve these stunning pictures that will be used on future projects by the trio. Please note the players are flying, condor-style, over the skyline of Oslo. Manfred spent the whole sessions kidding the Saluzzis about them being condors, referring to the previous album by the family "Juan Condori"and also to the fact that they were both born in Salta, a province in Argentina on the Andes, home of our national bird. Besides this, we must agree that Dino's improvisational style might sometimes resemble the feeling of flying, and if we are lucky, might take us on a ride.

Jakob Bro Trio

Another session that took place during Juan's stay in Oslo was the debut album on ECM by the Danish guitar player and composer Jakob Bro. The recording was, again, at the Rainbow Studio and engineered by Jan-Erik, produced by Manfred. NYC based bassist Thomas Morgan and legendary drummer Jon Christensen completed this trio. Christensen played with mostly every giant in european jazz (Garbarek, Jarrett, Stenson, Rypdal, among many others). The amazing colours of autumn helped us find a right spot for the portraits, in spite of the extremely short daylight times. The photos will be used in the forthcoming release.

Dino Saluzzi at the Rainbow Studio

Horacio Lavandera recorded the piano music of the great bandoneon player/composer Dino Saluzzi for ECM Records. The session was held at the legendary Rainbow Studio in Oslo, produced by Manfred Eicher and engineered by Jan-Erik Kongshaug. After listening to ECM albums for more than 35 years it was a memorable experience to share this ocassion with Grammy Award winner founder of ECM and producer Mr. Eicher.

Luigi Bosca Winery has just released some brand new wines and Juan has been shooting them as part of the 2013 campaign. Vicky Lopez from Leoncio Arizu has decided to work on a very dark key and elements from the terroir as a background. Eliana Testa from Lorenzo Shakespear Studio was the art director. As always it has been a pleasure to work with this team.

New campaign for El Gourmet

El Gourmet, the TV channel owned by Chello Media, has recently redefined their image and Juan has been busy providing new pictures of their talents for the newly-designed layouts. As always, shooting chefs is great fun as 99.9% of them are wonderful people.

Amazing pears and apples for Kleppe

Juan spent all day shooting wonderful apples and pears from Patagonia for the Argentinian export company Kleppe. The award-winning Gaucho brand is sold domestically and worldwide, and has been very popular in Germany and Scandinavia for more than 40 years. 

Bernabé Chauqui, chalán

Juan took this portrait of Bernabé Chauqui in Salta, many years ago, during the shooting for the book "The horse of the Viceroyship". Together with writer and graphic designer Gonzalo Berro they drove 8500 kmts around the vast Argentina to photograph the world of the Peruvian Paso horse, the different breeds, their habitat, breeders and of course the chalanes, the people who train and take care of these beautiful horses.

Portrait of Daniel Polski, ambassador

Juan met Daniel Polski, the former Argentinian Ambassador in Japan, and made some portraits for him for the Embassy in Tokyo. He is a wonderful guy and was extremely cooperative in the process. We decided to make a classical portrait, very much in the style of Karsh. Daniel has just left Buenos Aires for Berlin, where he will be presiding the Argentinian Embassy in Berlin.

More Gs for Graffigna

Pernod Ricard is doing very well in the North American market and keep re-packing their Graffigna wines. The line is represented by a strong G, which is now also applied to the Santiago Graffigna and Grand Reserve bottles. Their concept "Live bold"has been very successful so Juan will soon be producing material to illustrate the campaign in UK.

Again, for Cosmopolitan TV, Juan has been portraying talents. Mexican music producer Clauzzen Hernández conducts a reality show with strong journalistic content called Chicas Salvajes.

Shooting the newly opened Alvear Art Hotel in BA

Juan has been hired by José Sutton, owner and CEO of the Alvear Palace Hotel to shoot the entire newly opened Alvear Art Hotel in Buenos Aires. The photo shoot was intense and everything went smoothly thanks to the pro attitude of Marina Bares at the property. The pictures are already online.

My first vinyl cover: "Será una noche"

Unfortunately I began providing images for record covers when vinyl had been long considered extinct. So I had to accept the small size of the final print on the cover of a CD. That is, until now. Luckily, audiophiles have recently re-discovered vinyl as a valid format for good sound, and though for practical reasons I probably won't become another vinyl geek, I am certainly grateful for the sheer size of the album covers. ECM, Mobile Fidelity, Tacet and now MA recordings have decided to release special items as 45rpm high quality pressings.

Todd Garfinkle gave me the opportunity to use their first vinyl release (Será una noche) as a medium for a quite oldish (or should I say vintage) picture of mine, taken in 1991 in Mendoza, on the way to a skying trip to Las Leñas. One of my first "serious" photographs, taken with a Canon T-90, I had the original Agfapan 100 film scanned on a Hasselblad rotary scanner and spent hours restoring the negative. When I first showed a fiber-based print I struggled hard to accomplish to my friend and mentor, Oscar Pintor, he encouraged me and remarked the bold composition of this early picture. That was 22 years ago!
Besides this, I am also happy my photograph is used to illustrate a recording of Pedro Aznar's voice. I have listened to Pedro since the Seru Giran era through the years with the Pat Metheny Group to his solo projects. Hope you enjoy it.

Kalevi Aho et al

Kalevi Aho seems to be the key figure here. This contemporary Finnish composer in residence at the Lahti Symphony Orchestra is extremely prolific and regarded as one of the main figures in serious Finnish music, together with fellow composer Einojuhani Rautavaara. Juan has been lucky enough to provide abstract pictures for most of his new recordings, all released by the Swedish label BIS. But this is not all: the worldwide acclaimed Australian Chamber Orchestra, possibly the most accomplished ensemble of its kind nowadays, has recorded Mendelssohn's wonderful Octet for the label, together with the early double concerto for violin and piano. Juan has provided the cover for this release as well. Finally, another chamber ensemble: The Swedish Chamber Orchestra. David Kornfeld, graphic designer at BIS, chose this bucolic picture Juan took many years ago in Scandinavia, to illustrate the program of music by Schubert, conducted by Thomas Dausgaard.

Juan has been shooting Graffigna Elevation Red Blend wines for Estefania Jacobs and Franco D Angelo at Pernod Ricard. The new line is intended for launch in the US market where the brand has been doing very well indeed.

The Tyranny of Focus

Juan has recently opened his one-man show "The Tyranny of Focus" at Centro Cultural Plaza Castelli, in the beautiful Belgrano R neighborhood here in Buenos Aires. The show will be open 4 to 8 PM every day until March 17th.

Juan has been shooting new talents for Cosmopolitan TV. Among them is Natalia Lafourcade, the wonderful mexican pop star who will be the head of new project called Mi Mundo Privado.
